Hazardous materials Management
Ontario regulations set out a list of substances considered hazardous when construction work is performed in a building. Among these substances are asbestos, lead, beryllium, benzene, mercury and arsenic. Although the list of these substances is less comprehensive in Quebec, identifying potentially hazardous substances in a building remains an essential tool in efficiently managing occupational health and safety measures in a work environment. Le Groupe Gesfor specializes in the survey of hazardous materials likely to be found in buildings. Our expertise covers most hazardous substances, as well as other substances that are not regulated in Quebec and Ontario. The materials generally assessed during the surveys are the following:
- Asbestos:
- Identification, location and sampling of materials likely to contain asbestos
- Lead:
- Identification of surfaces covered by lead-based paint using X-ray fluorescent analyzers
- Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs):
- Identification of equipment likely to contain PCBs (particularly transformers and lighting fixture regulators)
- Mercury and beryllium:
- Site inspection and identification of materials, elements of buildings and equipment likely to contain, emit or generate mercury or beryllium
We follow up on each of our assessments systematically with a report that includes conclusions and recommendations on the actions to be taken.
